View Full Version : "HOT, HOT, HOT!" or Air in my cooling system?

Hey guys.

So, lately, my bike has been running VEEEEEERY hot, and I am not sure why. When I am riding/actually moving, I am usually at 5 or 6 bars. But the second I have to stop and idle (quite a lot around here, actually...), within 5-10 seconds I gain a bar and the fan kicks in. Then, every about ~10 seconds or so of waiting/idling, it goes up a bar -- and within 30 seconds, I'm always sitting at 9/10 bars!!! :whawhat: This is even at the ass-crack of dawn when I'm on my way to work and it is in the 50's or 60's out! :notamused:

I'm pretty sure that isn't right, and it has never happened before to me. I'm assuming that when the guy replaced my coolant, he didn't get rid of the air in the system? Any other ideas? Can I bleed the air myself, or what?

Thanks guys!

Yeah dude, check the coolant. With the bike cold, open the bleeder on the right top of the radiator and fill with whatever you use for coolant, add to the rad cap side. I'm riding down here in freekin 95 degree weather and it never goes over 6 bars even at a long red light. I switched to wetter water a long time ago and not sure if that's what makes it run so cool.

Word to what Scott said. Even in AZ I only hit the 9th bar at a stop if Im sitting at a light for more than 30 seconds.

I use Engine Ice, if that makes a difference. My overflow bottle is to the MAX line, too. Why would I have to fill it up more?

That's way too hot even for the weather you've been having. It could be a faulty sensor too but flushing the cooling system would be where I'd start

Alright. Looks like even though I paid the guy to do it as part of the 12k mile servive, he did it wrong... So, yeah, guess it's a case of "If you want something done right, do it yourself." :raspberry:

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help!

Crap, damit Josh. You had to say something about overheating. Just got back from a little ride, and I do mean little, and I have a noise I've never had before. Got off the bike and heard a loud bubbling sound. seems to be coming from the top of the engine on both sides. Never, ever heard that before. Guess you know how I will be spending the rest of my Sunday.

That blows. I'm going in for my 12k service to here in a month or so. But really all I'm having them do is plugs, tensioner, air filter, and the throttle body stuff. The rest of the stuff I do myself.

I WOULD, if I didn't pick up that #!%^&!* screw in my rear tire...... :nomore:

I ordered another rear tire Friday morning at work from STG, and I got the freakin' thing Saturday afternoon, LOL! I couldn't believe it... Man, I love that place!

So, I just need to be able to bring it in and get the tire changed out (and also have him get the damn air out of the system), and I'll be good to go. Maybe Saturday?
